How to Install the Doctor Blade

Before lifting the doctor, fit all collars, levers and bearings onto its journals in the order shown on the drawings. This ensures no parts are misplaced or overlooked.

Lift the doctor into place and rest the bearings on the brackets. Most units have shims under bearings — check the drawings to confirm.

Fit loading device brackets to bearing brackets if specified. Insert bearing bolts and tighten by hand. Fully tighten only after final alignment. Place spacers such as clean waste paper, felt offcuts or cardboard between the holder and roll until the loading mechanism is connected.

Check for obstructions. Account for oscillation, doctor retraction, sheet and fabric paths, and roll movement.

Connect pressure rigs, air cylinders or torque arms to levers or the doctor back as shown. Align levers per the drawings unless pre-positioned by a key, then secure with set screws. Attach the loading device to one fulcrum point only until alignment is finished. Carry out alignment using only the doctor’s own weight or the minimum air pressure needed to touch the roll.

On certain models, fulcrum brackets must be fixed to the frame separately. Refer to the drawings and ensure cylinders or pressure rigs sit at 90° to the levers.

Use the loading device to swing the doctor and holder away from the roll. You can then fit the Doctor blade and carry out alignment as described later.
