Efficient doctoring directly boosts paper machine productivity. Doctors are used at many positions. They remove contaminants, guide the sheet during threading or breaks, wipe water from rolls, and perform special tasks like creping and coating. These varied duties demand a carefully engineered solution at every stage. It all begins with the right base — the doctor blades back and blade holder.
The doctor back acts as the main support for the blade. In terms of structure, it must meet or exceed requirements for size, balance, strength, rigidity and vibration resistance. Standard, off‑the‑shelf units are rarely sufficient.
Choose the right design to suit available space and production demands. Options include structural angles, pipes, custom‑fabricated weldments, scoop backs or apron backs. Materials may be carbon steel, 304 or 316 stainless steel, or special grades — available in solid or clad forms.
Precision machining of the holder‑mounting surface is essential. This surface must match the roll profile exactly, whether straight or crowned. As a quality check, record measurements to an accuracy of one thousandth of an inch. Keep these records permanently — they serve as a useful reference throughout the doctor’s service life.
Once the key mounting surface meets specifications, fit the chosen blade holder firmly in place. You can select either a standard or custom‑made holder to match your exact needs.
