Do not modify, weld or machine the doctor back. This can compromise the integrity and function of the whole system.
Select blade material to match the roll’s material and hardness.
Always run the system at the lowest effective blade pressure.
Check blade wear regularly. Replace it before wear reaches about 15 % of original width (3/8–1/2 in. for a 3‑in. blade), or sooner if required. This is especially important with soft rolls.
When changing blades, inspect the holder slot and clean it if needed.
Check alignment periodically. Study worn blades for signs of misalignment. Perform checks only when rolls are in their working position.
Always use a new blade when verifying alignment.
Replace blades before they reach the end of their service life. Set a regular replacement schedule and keep records of all changes.
Replace any damaged blade or holder immediately.
Never lower a doctor onto a rotating roll. Never lower it onto soft press or calender rolls.
Inspect auxiliary equipment regularly — check lubrication, clearances and wear.
Use only high‑quality, precision‑manufactured blades. Essco blades are engineered for accuracy. Each is parallel‑ground or machined to be perfectly straight, with no bow. Dimensions and bevel angles meet strict standards. Every blade is hand‑finished, deburred and cleaned to deliver consistent results.
Doctors are built for specific positions and conditions. Do not move one to a different location unless you have confirmed it is suitable there.
Do not increase pressure to compensate for a worn blade. This lifts the tip and allows material to pass. Fit a new blade first, assess its performance, and only adjust pressure if necessary.
Newly ground rolls — especially granite, ceramic, cast iron or chilled iron types — often need a break‑in period before wear becomes stable. During this time blades may wear fast, unevenly or leave streaks. For cast iron rolls, use one or two bronze Doctor blades straight after grinding. HM can advise on break‑in procedures for other roll types.
