Arrange all parts neatly as shown on the drawing. Check fit and orientation before you start work — this will make installation much easier. Most parts carry tags matching the numbers on assembly drawings. Leave tags in place until you are ready to fit each component. Mark the bearing bracket positions using the exact dimensions given on the drawing. Most doctor blades are positioned based on the distance between roll centreline and doctor journal centreline. You can transfer these centreline positions to the machine frame using a spirit level and the roll radius (see FIG 1):
- Place the level tangent to the top or bottom of the roll, and transfer this tangent line to the frame.
- Measure vertically down or up by the roll radius to mark the horizontal centreline on the frame.
- Repeat a similar process at the 3 o’clock or 9 o’clock position to mark the vertical centreline.
The doctor journal centreline sits midway between the adjustment slots on the bearing bracket. Its height above the bracket base equals the distance from base to bearing centre. You can get this measurement from the drawing or directly from the bearing itself.
